Lineup Falling Into Place for Landmark UFC 129 Event

Unbeaten light heavyweight prospect Phil Davis will likely meet “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 3 alum Matt Hamill (Pictured) in a pivotal matchup at UFC 129 on April 30 at the Rogers Centre in Toronto.

A five-round welterweight title bout pairing champion Georges St. Pierre with former Strikeforce champion Jake Shields figures to headline the event, which will air live on pay-per-view. MMAWeekly.com was first to report the Davis-Hamill fight.

Davis last appeared at UFC 123 in November, when he submitted Tim Boetsch with a modified kimura at The Palace of Auburn Hills in Auburn Hills, Mich. A San Diego-based Lloyd Irvin protégé, the 26-year-old has won all four of his fights inside the Octagon. Davis, a Harrisburg, Pa., native, was a four-time Div. I All-American wrestler at Penn State University, where he won a national championship in 2008.

A decorated amateur wrestler in his own right, Hamill has been finished only once in 12 professional appearances. The 34-year-old Loveland, Ohio, native will carry a five-fight winning streak into his showdown with Davis. Hamill has not fought since UFC 121 in October, when he earned a unanimous decision over former light heavyweight champion and one-time mentor Tito Ortiz at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. Other victories over Keith Jardine, Mark Munoz and Seth Petruzelli anchor his resume.

Other matchups rumored but not yet confirmed for UFC 129 include a light heavyweight tilt pitting hall of famer Randy Couture against Lyoto Machida, a welterweight battle pairing Canadian prospect Rory MacDonald with “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 9 winner James Wilks and a lightweight battle between John Makdessi and “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 12 winner Jonathan Brookins. Five additional bouts -- Benson Henderson vs. Mark Bocek, Brian Foster vs. Sean Pierson, Pablo Garza vs. Yves Jabouin, Ivan Menjivar vs. Charlie Valencia and Jason MacDonald vs. Ryan Jensen -- are apparently in the works for the event, according to various reports.
