Manager: McGregor an Apparel ‘Free Agent,’ Not Tied to Reebok for Mayweather Bout

The days of individual, in-competition apparel deals are long gone for Ultimate Fighting Championship fighters, but not Conor McGregor.

On June 14, it was officially announced that McGregor's fantastical dream, a boxing showdown with 49-0 legend Floyd Mayweather Jr., would become a reality on Aug. 26. Now, it's been confirmed by the UFC lightweight champion's manager, Audie Attar, that McGregor won't be contractually bound or restrained in any way when it comes to seeking apparel sponsors for the bout with “Money Mayweather.”

“He’s currently a free agent with regard to athletic apparel. We’re still in discussions with Reebok and other brands,” Attar said Monday in an appearance on “The MMA Hour” with Ariel Helwani.

Since July 2015, UFC fighters at large have been rigorously subject to the promotion's exclusive outfitting deal with Reebok. However, McGregor's case is more compelling, as he has also has a separate Reebok sponsorship as a UFC athlete.

“We let a lot of our deals lapse, so there's a lot of open categories and brands, including Reebok, we'll see how that all plays out. He's currently a free agent as it relates to athletic apparel. We're still in discussion with Reebok and other brands,” explained Attar.

According to an ESPN report, when Mayweather fought Manny Pacquiao in May 2015, Mayweather received $1 million from Hublot and FanDuel for space on his shorts, and another $1 million from Burger King to have the King as part of his ring walk. Pacquiao's trunk sponsors netted an estimated $2.25 million.

“It’s definitely a great opportunity for Conor and any brand we decide to align with.”
