Undercard Results

In a battle of unbeaten junior middleweight prospects, it was local fighter Kuok Kun Ng who had his hand raised after a tough six rounds of action. Ng (6-0, 2 KOs) suffered a nasty cut over his left eye in the fight but that didn’t deter him from out-fighting opponent Steve Attard (5-1-2, 2 KOs) to nab a unanimous decision via tallies of 59-54 and 57-56 (twice).

Super flyweight contender Rex Tso improved to 15-0 (9) with an eight-round unanimous decision over Espinos Sabu. Tso dominated his opponent for much of the contest and wound up winning unanimously by the margins of 78-74 (twice) and 79-73. Sabu fell to 11-3-1 with 5 KOs.

Fellow super flyweight contender Jerwin Ancajas flattened Fadhili Majiha (15-6-4, 7 KOs) with a perfect shot in the third. Ancajas (22-1-1, 14 KOs) took out his opponent officialy at 1:48 of the round, opening the evening with a thrilling performance.

The bout that opened the event, Las Vegas-based Jessie Vargas defended his WBA junior welterweight title by out-slugging the hard-charging Mexican brawler Antonio DeMarco over twelve grueling rounds. Vargas, not known as a knockout artist by any stretch of the imagination, stood toe-to-toe with his foe, but couldn’t put him away and instead settled for a unanimous decision.

Vargas stayed right in front of the free swinging DeMarco for the vast majority of the contest and withstood everything the Los Mochis fighter offered up. Vargas (26-0, 9 KOs), who is now trained by the great Roy Jones, Jr., was rocked a few times in the skirmish, but he was never taken off his feet and slugged away when he needed to.

Even though he suffered a nasty cut under his left eye in the second, Vargas’ high volume of power punches allowed him to take a huge lead on the scorecards. But DeMarco was undaunted and continued to swing away at his foe, eventually tiring out the undefeated young champion in the process. The second half of the contest saw the tides swing heavily in DeMarco’s favor, though Antonio allowed the momentum shift to slip away.

In the championship rounds, DeMarco (31-4-1, 23 KOs) needed to continue his surge, but he inexplicably stopped brawling, which essentially handed the fight right back to Vargas. That decision cost him dearly as he likely would have at least fought to a draw, if not a possible stoppage win. Instead, the three judges all gave Vargas the final two rounds and the victory via tallies of 116-112, as did Sherdog.com.

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Vasyl Lomachenko displayed yet again what all the hype is about as he thoroughly thrashed the overmatched veteran Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo over twelve rounds, pitching a flawless shutout. Lomachenko, who suffered only one loss in almost 400 amateur fights before finally turning pro, was amazing with his angles, movement, and surgical counter punching.

Until he hurt his left hand.

It was near the end of the seventh when the Ukrainian wonder suffered the injury, which made him virtually a one-handed fighter for the final six rounds of the fight. Still, the Thai boxer had no answers for the in-and-out movement and annoying counter punching from Lomachenko.

Lomachenko scored a sizzling knockdown in the fourth and it seemed as though he was going to eventually take his foe out, but the injury to the hand prevented all forward progress from occurring, prompting Lomachenko to instead play it safe for the second half of the fight. But even by fighting almost solely with his right hand, Piriyapinyo couldn’t figure him out and lost every single round in the contest.

All three ringside judges favored Lomachenko 120-107 (as did Sherdog), which allowed him to improve to 3-1 with 1 KO, retaining the WBO featherweight title in the process. Piriyapinyo, who previously only lost to the great Chris John, fell to 51-2 with 33 KOs.

Zou Shiming had a remarkable amateur career in China that saw him capture one bronze and two golds in the Olympic Games. As a pro, there has always been an enormous groundswell of hype surrounding him, though he’s never quite delivered in the realm of spectacular performances due to his egregious lack of knockout power.

In the co-main event of the HBO Pay-Per-View telecast, Shiming scored three knockdowns over the grossly overmatched Thai boxer Kwanpichit Onesongchaigym. As feather fisted as they come, Shiming actually rocked his foe badly in the second, floored him twice, and almost took him out in said round. But Onesongchaigym hung tough for the remainder of the fight and wound up losing a horrendously one-sided decision.

Shiming was repeatedly fouled below the belt – which led to Onesongchaigym being penalized a point in the sixth – but he kept his composure because he was thoroughly dominating his foe every step of the way. Even when a clash of heads opened a nasty laceration above his left eye in the eighth, which also led to a grotesque hematoma in the same spot, Shiming never wavered and coasted toward the finish.

Shiming scored a flash knockdown late in the final round, but it was elementary as the victor was already set in stone; Onesongchaigym was never bouncing back. Shiming won easily by the scores of 119-106 (twice) and 120-103 to retain his minor flyweight title. Sherdog also saw it 120-103 for Shiming, who rose to 6-0 with 1 KO. For his efforts, Onesongchaigym dipped to 27-1-2 with 12 KOs.
