Matt Mitrione’s planned heavyweight meeting with Brendan Schaub has been pulled from the UFC on Fox 8 bill after Mitrione suffered a training injury.
UFC on Fox 8 takes place at Seattle’s KeyArena and is headlined by a flyweight title confrontation between Demetrious Johnson and John Moraga. The evening’s main card airs live on Fox’s flagship network and will also showcase a welterweight co-headliner pitting Jake Ellenberger against Rory MacDonald.
Both Mitrione and Schaub are alumni of “The Ultimate Fighter 10” and former professional football players. Following his time on the reality show, Mitrione rattled off five straight wins to begin his UFC career before suffering back-to-back losses to Cheick Kongo and Roy Nelson. “Meathead” righted his ship in his last outing, however, as the 34-year-old knocked out British grappler Philip De Fries in just 19 seconds at UFC on Fuel TV 9.
Like his former “TUF 10” cast mate, Schaub also halted a two-fight skid in his most recent contest, when he outpointed Lavar Johnson in a grinding unanimous decision this past February. Schaub posted four straight wins after falling to Nelson in the “TUF 10” finals, defeating the likes of Gabriel Gonzaga and Mirko Filipovic before suffering consecutive knockouts at the hands of Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Ben Rothwell.
