Mayweather Sr. Expects Son to Eventually Fight MMA, But Thinks ‘It’s Best to Leave It Alone’
While Floyd Mayweather Jr. was recently dismissive of a foray into mixed martial arts, his father sees things going another way.

“The way I see it, I have to believe that this is where it’s going,” Mayweather Sr. said. “The way it looks, I think so.”
That doesn’t mean, however, that the elder Mayweather necessarily
supports this endeavor. Mayweather Jr. reportedly earned $300
million for his Aug. 26 boxing match against UFC lightweight
champion Conor
McGregor, a fight which ended his career with a 50-0 mark in
the Sweet Science. Since then, the two stars have traded barbs on
social media regarding a potential Octagon matchup.
A rematch in the cage would undoubtedly produce a blockbuster payday, but Mayweather Sr. says money shouldn’t be an issue for his son.
“I don’t know what the legacy is because as of now, he has enough money and he’s got enough to live until his life runs out,” Mayweather Sr. said. “I don’t even know how to say it because there ain’t no way to say it because everything is done right now.”
With that in mind, Mayweather Sr. wouldn’t advise his son to transition to the UFC. Of course, in the long run, such counsel probably won’t matter.
No, I wouldn’t. As his trainer, no, as his father, no,” Mayweather Sr. said. “I want him to have all the money he’s got. The money he’s got, he’s got enough money — look here, it’s crazy money, man. He’s his own man though, that’s one thing about him.”
That said, if Mayweather Jr. to the UFC ever does become a reality, the father would still be in his son’s corner.
“Of course I’d train him. I’d try to do the best I can to make him win,” Mayweather Sr. said. “When you see an individual like my son, you don’t ever see a guy like that with a loss. You always see him in the winning spot. I’m gonna do the best I can to keep him where he needs to be.”
Mayweather Sr. believes his son his is talented enough to actually beat some of the fighters on the UFC roster. Ultimately though, attempting to succeed in a new discipline could prove to be a dangerous game.
“I’m gonna tell you the truth about it, I think he can win a few fights but I think it’s best to leave it alone,” he said. “You can do your own thing but you’re in somebody else’s playground now and holes and stuff are in there. You just can’t do that. Don’t get me wrong, I believe he can beat some fighters like the same as he did with the other guy but it ain’t worth it. Anytime you’ve done what he’s done, there ain’t no other way he can go right now but backwards. That’s the only way he can go right now.”
