Mayweather vs. McGregor Expected to Rival Super Bowl in Terms of Overall Wagers

By Mike Sloan Jun 15, 2017
Many have scorned the match as a demon spawn, the bastard child of the fight world. Others have rejoiced in jubilation because they can’t wait to watch it unfold. Regardless of how one views the fight, there’s no denying that the duel between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor is going to be massive..

Whether fight fans believe that “Notorious” will be able to land one big punch to end the fight or that “Money” will use his mesmerizing boxing ability to embarrass the Irishman, millions upon millions of dollars will be wagered across the globe. Will Mayweather win an easy decision or will McGregor pull off what would be the biggest upset un boxing history? No matter what occurs inside the squared circle, there is a prop bet for it. According to various wagering experts, this fight is expected to pull in enough money through wagering that it could rival the Super Bowl.

As of this writing, Mayweather is a surprisingly small favorite at -600 according to online sportsbook monolith Bovada. McGregor is just a +400 underdog overall, though most experts believe the odds should be much farther apart. The reason is, though, that tons of money has already been dumped on the reigning UFC lightweight champion since the fight was officially announced on Wednesday. McGregor opened at a 10 to 1 underdog and has already been bet up to 4 to 1.

“We have had up fight odds since Nov. 18 with the hopes that it would take place, and there has been non-stop McGregor money from being a 10/1 underdog to his current line as a 4/1 underdog. We expected more money to come in on McGregor, but not at this level. A McGregor win is already a huge liability for the book and it will only get bigger. I estimate that this fight might be the biggest single decision for us of any single event ever,” said Kevin Bradley, who is the sportsbook manager at Bovada. “The overall money and wagers on this may rival the Super Bowl, if not bigger, as we expect anyone and everyone to have a bet on it in some capacity.”

According to Bovada, a knockout from either man is the favorite at -175; a draw is a huge ‘dog pick at +3300; McGregor by technical or majority decision is 100 to 1; a Mayweather win by knockout is 3 to 1; and the over/under on how many pay-per-view buys the event will garner is 4.99 million.
