McGivern Replaces Kennedy in IFL Title Bout

Feb 4, 2008
Ryan McGivern (Pictures) has replaced Tim Kennedy (Pictures) in a 185-pound title match against IFL champion Matt Horwich (Pictures) scheduled for Feb. 29 in Las Vegas.

The IFL announced Monday that Kennedy, who is active in the U.S. military, had been called to duty.

"While it is disappointing to us and to Tim that he will be unable to compete due to his military obligations, we are excited and fortunate that a fighter of Ryan McGivern (Pictures)'s caliber is available to step in," said Bas Rutten (Pictures), the IFL's vice president of fighter operations. "Ryan has been a great success story, and his all-around style should make for an entertaining matchup with Matt Horwich (Pictures)."

McGivern fights out of the Miletich camp in Bettendorf, Iowa. At 11-5, the IFL veteran most recently knocked out Fabio Leopoldo (Pictures) in September. In December 2006, he defeated Horwich via unanimous decision.

However, since that loss, Horwich has won four of five fights, including a December 2007 knockout of Benji Radach (Pictures) to claim the IFL middleweight title.
