Middleweights Simpson, Catone to Meet at UFC 136

Aaron Simpson and Nick Catone are the latest additions to the rapidly expanding fight card for UFC 136.

UFC officials announced Monday that the middleweight wrestlers have agreed to square off Oct. 8 at Houston’s Toyota Center.

Expected to top the pay-per-view portion of UFC 136 is a pair of championship bouts, with top-ranked lightweight Frankie Edgar defending against Gray Maynard and featherweight ace Jose Aldo taking on Kenny Florian.

Simpson (Pictured), 36, is only weeks removed from a unanimous decision win over previously unbeaten Brad Tavares at UFC 132. The two-time All-American from Arizona State University has rebounded from the first losses of his career -- to Chris Leben, then Mark Munoz -- with back-to-back decisions over Tavares and Mario Miranda in 2011. Simpson, who fights out of Power MMA Team in Gilbert, Ariz., did not go the distance in any of his first seven bouts, but has seen the judges’ scorecards in four of his last five.

A high school and collegiate wrestler with a brown belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, 29-year-old Catone has seen his Octagon stay troubled by injuries, competing five times in two and a half years. Since dropping consecutive fights to Munoz and Tim Credeur, the “Jersey Devil” has outpointed two straight, most recently decisioning short-notice opponent Constantinos Philippou in March.
