‘Mighty Mouse’ vs. Borg, Nunes vs. Shevchenko Top UFC 215 Lineup in Edmonton

Demetrious Johnson will get his wish and make his next flyweight title defense against Ray Borg.

The bout will serve as the headliner for UFC 215 at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on Sept. 9. Additionally, a women’s bantamweight championship clash between Amanda Nunes and Valentina Shevchenko – originally scheduled for UFC 213 -- has been rebooked as the UFC 215 co-main event. Promotion officials confirmed the matchups on Thursday.

Johnson was recently involved in a public dispute with the promotion regarding his next opponent. The UFC wanted “Mighty Mouse” to attempt to break the record for most consecutive belt defenses against ex-bantamweight king T.J. Dillashaw, while Johnson preferred Borg. The AMC Pankration product recently made his 10th straight title defense, tying Anderson Silva’s record, with a third-round submission of Wilson Reis at UFC on Fox 24.

Borg, meanwhile, has won five of his last six Octagon appearances. He last appeared at UFC Fight Night 106, where he earned a unanimous decision triumph over Jussier da Silva on March 11. The 23-year-old Jackson-Wink MMA product owns an 11-2 career mark.

Nunes pulled out of her UFC 213 title defense against Shevchenko on the day of the bout due to illness. However, UFC President Dana White said that the Brazilian champion was cleared to fight.

“You can’t make anybody fight,” White said at the UFC 213 post-fight press conference. “She said, ‘I don’t feel right.’ I think it was 90 percent mental and 10 percent physical. A lot of times we’ve had fighters who don’t feel right and other times they’re outright sick. I don’t know if I’ve ever had a situation like today where she was physically capable of fighting.”

Nunes and Shevchenko initially squared off at UFC 196, with “Lioness” capturing a unanimous decision victory.
