Former M-1 Global bantamweight champion Movsar Evloev was dominant against Sung Woo Choi in the UFC Fight Night 149 featured preliminary bout Saturday, as he used his brilliant wrestling game to do virtually whatever he wanted in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Choi (7-2) landed a few stinging kicks early, but once Evloev got
close enough, he either took the South Korean down or tied him up
against the cage. Choi was never allowed to get anything going
offensively and aside from when Evloev (11-0) had a point deducted
in the second for an illegal knee to a downed opponent, nothing
went his way. Evloev never truly hurt his featherweight opponent,
but he won a lopsided unanimous decision.
Two judges had it 29-27 and the third saw it 29-26, giving the local fighter the win.
Sultan Aliev may have won every round against fellow welterweight Keita Nakamura, but it wasn’t easy. Aliev (15-3) used a powerful jab and slick counter punching behind a solid wrestling base, but the Japanese fighter kept him honest throughout.
Aliev took “K-Taro” down a few times, but he was never able to keep him there and Nakamura (34-10) landed several hard lead rights upstairs, but they never wobbled Aliev. Overall, the Russian did more than enough one each round and won a unanimous nod via tallies of 30-27 across the board.
Lightweight contender Alexander Yakovlev took his time with Brazil’s Alex Da Silva, bit he eventually nabbed a nifty submission win along the way. “Leko” continuously threatened Yakovlev with takedown attempts, but when “The Thunder of the North” stuffed Da Silva in the second, he made him pay.
With Da Silva (20-2) on his knees and driving for a takedown against the cage, Yakovlev (24-8-1) sunk in a hybrid guillotine-anaconda choke and forced the tap. The end came officially at 3:10 of the second.
Russian heavyweight Shamil Abdurakhimov looked better than ever in stopping Poland’s Marcin Tybura (17-5) in the second round. “Abrek” used solid footwork and swift punching to befuddle “Tybur” from the start and he eventually put him away.
After busting up Tybura’s nose and wearing him down with body shots, Abdurakhimov closed the show with a left hook to the jaw. Tybura stumbled into the cage and Abdurakhimov (20-4) unleashed a volley of punches and once the Pole crumbled to the seat of his trunks, referee Herb Dean stopped it. The end came officially at 3:15 of the second.
Light heavyweight Gadzhimurad Antigulov exploded out of his corner and swarmed Michal Olekseivczuk with punches and tried taking him down, but his aggression backfired. Olekseivczuk (14-2) dropped the Russian with a left hook and when Antigulov (20-6) scrambled back to his feet, dropped him with a left uppercut. Antigulov popped back up to his feet again, but “Lord” sent him onto his back with another left uppercut, this time for good.
Olekseivczuk slammed a few follow-up punches onto Antigulov’s face, knocking him completely out. All this happened in just 44 seconds.
He had been out of the Octagon for a few years, but when Magomed Mustafaev returned on Saturday, he made it worthwhile.
Entering as a slight betting underdog, Mustafaev (14-2) landed a brilliant spinning back kick to the jaw of lightweight foe Rafael Fiziev (6-1), dropping him. Fiziev was badly dazed and Mustafaev pounced, finishing him off with punches. The end came just 86 seconds into the match, kicking off the event in grand style.
