A lightweight title tilt between Mukai Maromo and Graham Spencer will highlight MFC 36, promotion officials recently announced.
MFC 36 “Reality Check” takes place Feb. 15 at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, and will also see unbeaten Smealinho Rama square off with fellow Canadian Mike Hackert to determine the next No. 1 contender for the Maximum Fighting Championship heavyweight belt. The evening’s main draw airs live on AXS TV.
Maromo and Spencer previously met in December 2010, with Spencer taking a unanimous decision from “The Afrikan Assassin.” Since that setback, Maromo has not lost, rattling off five straight victories. Most recently, Maromo bested Adam Lynn in back-to-back bouts, earning a split decision over the veteran this past May before knocking him out with a knee on Aug. 10 at MFC 34.
“That loss has stuck with me, and I need to get it back,” said Maromo in the official release. “All along, my plan has been to become the MFC lightweight champ. I want to become the first Canadian-based fighter to win that belt. I want to make that mark, and then I want to defend the title successfully.”
Like his foe, Spencer has also avoided defeat since their first meeting, posting four wins and a no-contest in his last five outings. Spencer last competed on Oct. 26, snatching a unanimous decision from UFC veteran Shane Nelson at MFC 35 to earn his third straight victory.
