NSAC Fines 'Babalu' 25K

The Nevada State Athletic Commission on Monday fined light heavyweight Renato "Babalu" Sobral (Pictures) $25,000 for conduct stemming from his UFC 74 fight against David Heath (Pictures) Aug. 25 in Las Vegas. He was not suspended.

In the second round of a bloody light heavyweight fight, "Babalu" elicited a tap after applying an anaconda choke against the blood-soaked fighter from Tulsa, Okla. Yet the 31-year-old Brazilian refused to acknowledge referee Steve Mazzagatti's repeated efforts to separate the pair.

Following less than contrite post-fight comments from "Babalu," NSAC executive director Keith Kizer withheld half of Sobral's $50,000 purse and days later the UFC cut the former title challenger from his contract.

"Egregiousness" of the infraction and "referee involvement," Kizer told Sherdog.com, were determining factors in putting the issue before the commission.

Currently a free agent, Sobral is rumored to be negotiating fight contracts with several promoters.
