Nevada Athletic Commission: Carwin, Nelson Pass Pre-Fight Drug Tests for ‘TUF 16’ Finale

Both Shane Carwin and Roy Nelson passed an out-of-competition drug test conducted by the Nevada Athletic Commission ahead of their upcoming clash at “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 16 finale.

NAC Executive Director Keith Kizer notified Sherdog.com of the test results on Friday.

“Both [fighters] were tested for steroids and diuretics in mid-October and passed,” Kizer wrote in an email.

Currently serving as coaches on “TUF 16,” Nelson and Carwin will headline the show’s Dec. 15 live finale at the The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The evening’s main draw airs live on FX and will also see Jamie Varner lock horns with Melvin Guillard in a lightweight affair.

Carwin, 37, has battled injuries to his neck and back for the last several years, competing just once since his failed attempt to win the heavyweight championship in 2010. Following his submission at the hands of then-champion Brock Lesnar, Carwin was battered by Junior dos Santos in a title eliminator nearly one year later. Currently rehabbing a minor knee injury, the former interim belt holder is still expected to compete as planned on Dec. 15.

In addition to the NAC’s testing, Nelson has also enrolled himself in the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) in the leadup to his bout with Carwin. “Big Country” has won two of his last three fights, going 1-1 so far this year. Though Nelson was outstruck by Fabricio Werdum at UFC 143 in February, the heavyweight rebounded with an impressive performance in May, putting Dave Herman to sleep with a violent overhand right at UFC 146.
