Sherdog.com’s correspondents in Brazil, Gleidson Venga (founder of
the most visited Brazilian Web site, Portal do Vale-Tudo) and
Marcelo Alonso (former editor of Tatame Magazine for the last 13
years), have joined together to create the first free MMA monthly
Internet magazine published in Portuguese and English.
“I’ve always dreamed to produce a magazine that could be read by any fans in the world. From now on, Gleidson and I will try to bring the best events, interviews and coverage of the Brazilian MMA scene to the world,” promised Alonso, who is now also a partner in the Portal do Vale-Tudo site.
In the very first edition, Venga and Alonso will publish a special
interview with Anderson
Silva. The UFC middleweight champion opened the doors of his
house to the new magazine and made some very interesting
revelations about his personal life, introduced his “Street
Fighter” toy collection, talked about his passion for video games,
discussed his surgery and also claimed that the UFC once tried to
have him relinquish his belt.
“They even suggested that I could give my belt back, but I didn’t want to do so,” Silva said. “It was so hard for me to win it. If someone wants to take it, it will have to be the same hard way I got it.”
The new magazine also has an interview with living legend João Alberto Barreto, one of the most respected vale tudo fighters of the Gracie school in the 1950s and also the best sparring partner of Carlson Gracie. The first issue also recalls when Wanderlei Silva debuted in the IVC, back in 1997, from the view of a photographer who witnessed the birth of the “Axe Murderer.”
To complete the issue, Lyoto Machida and Demian Maia were invited to teach some of their techniques in a private class session, and Aline Campos, considered one of the best ring girls in Brazil, made a challenge to Dana White: “America is an example of democracy. I don’t understand why they don’t open the market to Brazilian ring girls.”
