“The Ultimate Fighter” Season 13 finalist Ramsey
Nijem and
WEC import Daniel
Downes have reached a verbal agreement to meet in a lightweight
matchup at UFC
137 “St. Pierre vs. Diaz” on Oct. 29 at the Mandalay Bay Events
Center in Las Vegas. The promotion on Thursday unveiled the
proposed bout.
Nijem (4-2, 0-1 UFC) reached the welterweight final on Season 13 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” only to be knocked out in the first round by Tony Ferguson at the live finale; the defeat snapped his three-fight winning streak. A 23-year-old Concord, Calif., native, Nijem (Pictured; file photo) wrestled collegiately at Utah Valley University and has trained extensively with UFC veteran Josh Burkman and “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 11 winner Court McGee at the Riven Academy in Utah.
A protégé of former world kickboxing champion Duke Roufus, Downes (8-2, 0-1 UFC) made his promotional debut at “The Ultimate Fighter 13” Finale in June, when he lost a unanimous decision to Jeremy Stephens at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. The 25-year-old Chicago native and Marquette University graduate has secured five of his eight professional victories by knockout or technical knockout.
An anticipated five-round welterweight title bout pairing longtime champion Georges St. Pierre with former Strikeforce titleholder Nick Diaz will headline UFC 137. In addition, former WEC kingpin Carlos Condit will lock horns with B.J. Penn -- one of two men to win UFC gold in more than one weight class -- in a pivotal matchup at 170 pounds.
