PBC on CBS: Omar Figueroa Wins 140-Pound Debut, McDonnell Retains Title

By Mike Fridley May 9, 2015
Omar Figueroa Jr. kept his unblemished record intact Saturday in the Premier Boxing Champions on CBS headliner at State Farm Arena in Hidalgo, Texas.

It was not a pretty fight, but Figueroa did enough to move his record to 25-0 with 18 KOs in a 12-round unanimous decision over Ricky Burns. It may not have been aesthetically pleasing, but it was entertaining.

“It was a good fight. I expected it to be this way,” said Figueroa. “We prepared for this. I’m just happy I gave my fans a good performance. And I gave them a win.”

In a fight mostly contested on the inside in the closest of quarters, Figueroa did his best work to the body and with short uppercuts. Burns, now 37-5 with 11 KOs, controlled the action from the outside but was unable to find an answer for Figueroa’s impressive clinch game.

When Burns did find an answer, it was an illegal approach, as referee Laurence Cole twice deducted points and issued several warnings for the Scottish fighter’s holding.

In the end, the official ringside judges scored the contest 117-109, 116-110, 116-110. Sherdog.com’s unofficial scorer saw the action much closer, with a tally of 113-113.

McDonnell Retains Title

In an action-packed bout, Jamie McDonnell (26-2, 12 KO) retained his WBA world bantamweight title with a close and contested unanimous decision over Tomoki Kameda.

Kameda scored the only knockdown of the fight with a beautiful right hook in the third round. It looked early as if Kameda would rout McDonnell, but the champion took the middle rounds with relative ease until Kameda again found his rhythm late.

“I believe I won every round,” declared Kameda (31-1, 19 KO) following his first career defeat. “I don’t know what the judges saw, but I feel like I won every round. I just cannot see how I lost this fight.”

All three official judges saw the clash 114-113. Sherdog.com's unofficial scorer had it 114-113 for Kameda.
