PBC on FS1 Weigh-in Results: Gassiev, Shimmell on Point for IBF Title Eliminator
Murat Gassiev and Jordan Shimmell both tipped the beam under the
cruiserweight limit on Monday afternoon, making their Premier
Boxing Champions main event official.
The unbeaten Russian Gassiev (22-0, 1 NC, 16 KOs) checked in at 199.2 pounds, while Shimmell (20-1, 16 KOs) came in at a lean 196 pounds even. The cruiserweight contest headlines the latest PBC effort on Fox Sports 1 and Fox Deportes (9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT) and emanates from the Black Bear Casino Resort in Carlton, Minn.
The 22-year-old Gassiev has yet to lose, but suffered a minor
setback in his last outing in December, when he landed he smashed
then-unbeaten Isiah Thomas just after the third round bell and
Thomas was unable to continue, leading to a No Contest. Shimmell, a
four-time Michigan Golden Gloves champ, suffered his lone career
loss to the aforementioned Thomas last July before rebounding with
a win over Willis Lockett in February when Lockett was disqualified
for excessive holding.
The bout's winner will become the IBF mandatory cruiserweight challenger and figures to face the winner of May 21's WBA-IBF title unification bout between Denis Lebedev and Victor Emilio Ramirez in Moscow.
The televised undercard action will feature a pair of heavyweight unbeatens, as John Wesley Nofire (19-0, 15 KOs) takes on Joey Abell (31-9, 29 KOs) in an eight-round affair, while Stephan Shaw (6-0, 5 KOs) faces Danny Kelly (9-2-1, 8 KOs) in a six-rounder.
