PBC on Spike Weigh-in Results: Erislandy Lara, Delvin Rodriguez Official for Headliner
The WBA super welterweight championship bout between Erislandy Lara and Delvin Rodriguez is officially a go, as both
combatants cleared the 154-pound limit. Their duel, which anchors
the Premier Boxing Champions card on Spike TV
Friday night, will be for Lara’s title and is scheduled for 12
rounds.
Rodriguez (28-7-4, 16 KOs), a Dominican Republic native living in Connecticut, was first to climb aboard the scale. Set to fight for the third time in an attempt at a major world title, Rodriguez cleared all the hurdles and clocked in at 153.4 pounds. Rodriguez previously fell short at world title bids twice; once for the vacant IBF welterweight belt against Isaac Hlatshwayo and a few years later versus Austin Trout for the very same title Lara now owns. Rodriguez, though, hasn’t won since knocking out Freddy Hernandez two years ago. He’s gone 0-1-1 since.
Lara, from Cuba but now residing in Houston, is set to defend his title for the first time. He won it by scoring a lopsided unanimous decision over Ishe Smith back in December. Lara (20-2-2, 12 KOs) also has toppled the likes of Trout and Alfredo Angulo; his most recent loss, however, was a hotly-criticized split decision defeat to Saul “Canelo” Alvarez last July. Lara weighed in officially at 153.6 pounds.
The tussle will air live on Spike TV starting at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and includes the ballyhooed light heavyweight clash between unbeaten Artur Beterbiev (8-0, eight KOs) and late-replacement Alexander Johnson (16-2, seven KOs).
