Peralta Injured; Semerzier Faces Replacement Pineda at UFC on FX 2

Robert Peralta and Mackens Semerzier will have to wait a bit longer to settle their score.

UFC officials Tuesday announced that Peralta has suffered an injury and will be unable to rematch Semerzier as originally expected at UFC on FX 2. In his place steps Daniel Pineda (Pictured), who made his Octagon debut at UFC on FX 1.

The featherweight contest joins 10 previously announced bouts on the bill, including a headlining 170-pound matchup pitting Thiago Alves against Martin Kampmann.

The event will also feature the opening round of the promotion’s four-man flyweight championship tournament, showcasing Joseph Benavidez, Yasuhiro Urushitani, Demetrious Johnson and Ian McCall.

UFC on FX 2 takes place March 3 at Allphones Arena in Sydney.

Peralta and Semerzier first met at UFC on Fox 1 in November. The competitive bout ended in controversy, as Semerzier was floored by an accidental head-butt which went unnoticed by referee John McCarthy. Peralta finished his stunned opponent with ground-and-pound, earning a technical knockout victory. However, Semerzier’s camp appealed the decision with the California State Athletic Commission soon thereafter, and the verdict was changed to a no-contest.

A winner of eight consecutive bouts with the exception of the aforementioned no-contest, Peralta owns 11 of his 15 career wins by knockout. “Problems” earned his first UFC win in September, outpointing Mike Lullo at Fight Night 25. The victory came on the heels of Peralta’s breakout victory over Hiroyuki Takaya at Strikeforce “Diaz vs. Daley” this past April.

Pineda, 26, has won eight of his last nine fights. Following a stint in the Legacy Fighting Championship that saw the fighter capture the promotion’s featherweight and lightweight titles, Pineda quickly submitted fellow Octagon newcomer Pat Schilling in his Jan. 20 UFC debut, finishing the bout with a rear-naked choke in just 97 seconds.
