Phan Out, ‘Zombie’ In Against Garcia at UFC Fight Night 24
Sherdog.com Staff Mar 16, 2011
UFC featherweight Nam Phan has
suffered an undisclosed injury and has withdrawn from his rematch
with Leonard
Garcia at UFC Fight
Night 24.
According to a Wednesday posting on the UFC’s official Twitter account, “Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung (Pictured) will take Phan’s place for his own rematch with Garcia. The bout will be part of the Spike TV-broadcast main card of the event, which takes place March 26 at Seattle’s KeyArena.
Jung and Garcia first met in a heated and, thereafter, controversial three-round brawl which earned “Fight of the Night” honors at WEC 48 in April 2010. Garcia won that meeting via split decision.
Since that fight, the 31-year-old Garcia has gone 1-1, dropping a split decision to Mark Hominick in his WEC swan song before edging out another highly contentious split against Phan at “The Ultimate Fighter 12” finale in December. The Texas “Bad Boy” has seen the judges’ scorecards in each of his last six outings, resulting in three wins, two losses and one draw.
Jung, 23, has competed just once since his loss to Garcia. The South Korean fan favorite was stopped for the first time in brutal fashion when a George Roop head kick found its mark at WEC 51 last September. A veteran of Japan’s Sengoku and Deep promotions, Jung holds an overall record of 10-3 and will make his UFC debut against Garcia.
