UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is being sought for questioning by police in Albuquerque, N.M.
The Albuquerque Police Department Sunday evening confirmed that they are actively seeking to question Jones regarding a hit-and-run accident which occurred early Sunday morning.
“Officers attempted to contact Mr. Jones at his residence Sunday evening, but were unsuccessful,” APD stated in a release. “We have also reached out to his lawyer, but as of now, have not heard back.”
According to the APD statement, the driver of a separate vehicle involved in the accident -- “a pregnant female in her 20s” -- was transported to an area hospital for minor injuries.
Jones is scheduled to defend his title against challenger Anthony Johnson on May 23 in the main event of UFC 187. The 27-year-old New York native drew headlines in January when it was revealed that he tested positive for cocaine prior to his title defense against Daniel Cormier at UFC 182.
Late Sunday night, the UFC made comment:
“We are aware that the Albuquerque Police Department is interested in speaking to Jon Jones regarding his possible involvement in a motor vehicle accident,” said the statement. “We are in the process of gathering facts and will reserve further comment until more information is available.”
