RFA 23 Play-by-Play: ‘Murphy vs. Ware’ Results & Updates



Sherdog.com reports from the OC Fair and Events Center in Costa Mesa, Calif., at approximately 8 p.m. ET with live RFA 23 results and play-by-play.

Dan Ige vs. Ian Millan

Round 1

Featherweight action will get us underway this evening, Herb Dean will be the third man inside the cage. Ige strikes first with a stiff leg kick. Millan eats the kick and comes back with a lunging one-two punching combination that he finishes with a takedown. Ige uses a guillotine to defend, but quickly lets go. Ige then attacks with an armbar attempt that is deep, but Millan wiggles out of. The two grapple on the floor, Ige transitions to the back, sinks in the rear-naked choke and that’s all she wrote. Millan taps quickly.

Tim Quiroga vs. Christian Aguilera

Round 1

Mike Beltran is overseeing the second preliminary bout of the card. Right off the bat, Quiroga shoots for a takedown but runs out of real estate, winding up against the cage. Aguilera punches free, then pounces. In a moment’s notice, Aguilera begins pounding the temple of Quiroga and Beltran quickly steps in to stop the action.

Mike Jasper vs. Blake Troop

Round 1

After nearly getting taken down, Blake Troop turns the tables on Mike Jasper and winds up in dominant position. Jasper actively looking for submissions on the mat, but Troop is keeping his head down and staying out of it. Troop moves into side control, but isn’t doing much in the way of offense. Jasper explodes upright, but is taken down again by Troop. This time around Troop manages to shoot off a couple punches, but Jasper gets up and gives Troop a window of opportunity for the rear-naked choke. Jasper survives, lands two punches as the first round expires. 10-9 Troop.

Round 2

Troop shoots to open the second round but Jasper sprawls the attempt well. Troop won’t give up on it though, and winds up against the cage. Jasper spins out of it and Troop’s momentum puts him on the mat. Jasper drops two big shots down onto him and opens up his opponent under the eye. Troop is blindly holding onto the leg of Jasper but is eating a ton of elbows for his efforts. Single-leg attempt from Troop just puts him in the position of absorbing more punishment, referee Herb Dean is watching this very closely. Dean deemed one of the strikes to be illegal, briefly stopping the action and issuing a stern verbal warning. On the restart Troop goes back to the well and looks for the takedown, but Jasper is really pouring it on. Jasper thinks that Troop verbally submits, running away in celebration, but Dean lets him know that the fight is still going on. This round was quite one-sided. 10-9 Jasper.

Round 3

Serious conversation going on between Troop and the ringside doctor before the third and final round, but Troop wants to continue. Troop is throwing zombie-esque punches at Jasper who is easily stepping to the side and countering. Troop presses Jasper against cage, but Jasper pushes him down and winds up in top position. Jasper postures up to gain some leverage on his shots, but Troop adjusts and is able to grab a leg. Jasper begins pounding the temple with elbows again and finally Dean waves this one off.

Ron Henderson vs. Adam Antolin

Round 1

Mike Beltran is the referee for this bout between Ron Henderson and Adam Antolin. Henderson misses with a big shot to start the tilt, both men walking eachother down early, but not striking. Henderson strikes again, this time catching Antolin. A kick from Antolin misses its mark, hitting the cup of Henderson. Spinning back kick from Antolin on the restart, who then closes the space and takes Henderson to the mat briefly. Henderson trying to create some space but Antolin is relentless with his pressure. Henderson is not able to separate, he eats elbows until the round draws to a close. 10-9 Antolin.

Round 2

Henderson throws a jab to open the second frame but Antolin counters and lands a shot. Henderson is avoiding Antolin at this point, circling the outside of the cage, but Antolin is pressing. Henderson throws a kick that gets caught, Antolin throws the leg to the side and takes the back of his opponent. The action slows as Antolin controls Henderson up against the cage. The two men take their turns throwing punching exchanges, but Antolin gets the better of it and controls the pace. 10-9 Antolin.

Round 3

Antolin shoots on the takedown but this time it’s prevented. Henderson coming out swinging here, but the shots are being avoided. Antolin counters and clips Henderson. Antolin moves to the back of his opponent, slowly dragging him down. They separate. Front kick from Antolin. Head kick from Antolin narrowly misses. An overhand from Henderson opens up the top of Antolin’s head, the blood is slowly trickling down his face. Henderson lazily shoots for a takedown, Antolin is all over him, quickly taking his back, sinking in the rear-naked choke. Henderson doesn’t tap to the hold and passes out. After a moment, he’s put up on a stool.

Jocelyn Lybarger vs. Maria Rios

Round 1

Huge contingent of fans here for Maria Rios’ fight against Jocelyn Lybarger. This women’s strawweight fights pops off with Lybarger rocking rios with left and right hooks. Rios closes the distance and looks to clinch up, but Lybarger powers out. These two are throwing shots from inside the pocket. Rios changes that, shoots in and trips Lybarger, assuming top position. In little time, Rios passes into full mount. Lybarger gives up her back, allowing Rios to seek the submission. Lybarger is trying to thrust her off, but Rios is hanging on like a leech. Finally Lybarger gets Rios off her back, but Rios maintains control for the remainder of the round by seeking the triangle choke. 10-9 Rios.

Round 2

Rios is showing a ton of wear and tear under her right eye. Lybarger is peppering the ailment with her jab now. Rios has her right hand directly against the side of her face to avoid the damage. Rios has enough of the shots and pushes Lybarger against the cage, but this doesn’t last long. The pace set in the opening frame has slowed down a significant bit and this seems to benefit the striking style of Lybarger. The round closes with Rios landing the final shot. 10-9 Lybarger.

Round 3

The third and final round begins with Rios eating two power punches from Lybarger. The Arizona native presses Rios against the cage briefly, but this time around Rios moves away from it. The two women stand in the center of the cage, trading leg kicks. The reach of Lybarger is the difference maker when they stand and trade. The crowd is doing its part to try and sway these CSAC judges, anytime Rios lands any sort of strike. Lybarger connecting with her hook shots, Rios landing sparingly. Big overhand right from Lybarger, Rios follows with an uppercut, the two women embrace as the final horn sounds. 10-9 Lybarger (29-28) Lybarger.

Mikey Gomez vs. Dominic Waters

Round 1

Dominic Waters swinging for the fences early against Mikey Gomez, so much so, that the veteran takes him to the mat. After a brief period on the bottom, Waters flips the script and climbs on top. Gomez in the rubber guard, nullifying any strikes from Waters. Still not much action to speak of, Gomez doing a good job of defending, while Waters is doing a good job of staying on top. They stand, Gomez throws a big leg kick that knocks Waters from his feet. The round ends with both men against the cage. 10-9 Waters.

Round 2

Gomez throws a knee that he follows with a punch. Waters quickly gets out of the situation and takes the fight to the floor. Same situation as the first round. Waters in top control, not managing to separate enough to do damage. The two fighters stand up, Waters clips Gomez with a shot that staggers his opponent. Waters again takes Gomez to the floor, this time in side control. After a period of inactivity, referee Mike Beltran stands the two men up. Waters immediately connects with a right hook, testing the chin of Gomez. The final ten seconds feature Waters walking down a retreating Gomez. 10-9 Waters.

Round 3

Waters opens the third and final round with a spat of violence, taking Gomez to the floor and opening up with a flurry of wild hammerfists. Gomez doing all he can to hold on for dear life. Anytime Waters gets even a little bit of space, Gomez grabs ahold and brings him closer to avoid punishment. Again, Beltran stands them up. Waters puts his head down, throws two punches and scores a takedown. Waters stands, waiting for Gomez to get up, but Gomez refuses. Waters re-engages. Waters looks for a kimura, but then gives up and goes back to throwing punches. The fight ends with Waters on top. 10-9 Waters -- 30-27 Waters.

Raoni Barcelos vs. Jamal Parks

Round 1

Raoni Barcelos takes the fight to Jamal Parks early, using his striking to quickly take control of the cage. A quick punching combination backs Parks up, but now Barcelos comes inside with a one-two punching combination that drops Parks to the canvas. Herb Dean is right over the action and this one is finished. A quick flurry of right hands after crumpling Parks is all it took. Parks had no answer for Barcelos quickness, as the 27-year-old wins his eighth fight in nine tries.

Joseph Henle vs. Gabriel Checco

Round 1

Joseph Henle starts quickly, pressing Gabriel Checco against the cage and looking for the takedown. Jab from Checco connects. Now Checco catches Henle with a left shot that sends Henle backwards. Henle immediately covers up his head, Checco follows up, dropping more shots, but Mike Beltran is there to wave the fight off.

Joe Murphy vs. Terrion Ware

Round 1

It’s main event time here in Costa Mesa, both sides of the crowd are lined up ready to welcome their fighter. Terrion Ware will be in the blue corner, while Joe Murphy is set up in the red corner. Ware is visibly longer than Murphy when they stand next to eachother. Murphy strikes first, landing a nice kicking combination that he parlays with a punch up top. Ware has yet to throw anything a minute and a half in. Murphy clips his opponent with a shot, Ware lunges and lands a punch. Overhand right from Ware connects, opening up the eye of Murphy. Head kick attempt from Murphy is blocked. Murphy is bleeding heavily from the eye. Ware picking his spots well. Straight left hand from Ware hits its mark. Ware doing a good job of cutting off the cage from the quick Murphy. Head kick attempt from Ware misses its mark. Ware catches a kick from Murphy and then lands a stiff kick to the body of his own. 10-9 Ware.

Round 2

Round two of three, loud chants of “let’s go Joe” ringing out. Ware catches Murphy on the chin with a shot to open the round. Murphy working the left jab, pawing at his opponent. Big right hand from Ware resounds through the hangar here. Murphy scores with a head kick, but Ware walks it off. Ware throws a lunging punching combination, but Murphy times his counter well and gets the better of the exchange. Leg kick from Ware is checked. Murphy, who is bleeding heavily, takes the fight to the mat. Ware fights out of it and gets back up. The crowd is losing their minds. Murphy circling away from the right hand of Ware. Murphy opens up with a huge punching combination that culminates in a knee. Ware punches his way out of it. Ware throws a leg kick that seems to hurt Murphy as the round closes. 10-9 Murphy.

Round 3

The two come together and throw shots in unison. Ware slips a bit on the mat, but quickly regains his footing. Ware bobbing and weaving, now Murphy opens with a flurry as Ware is pressed against the cage. Ware covers up, absorbing the punishment, but he definitely took some shots there. Murphy going hard for a finish here and with every shot he lands, the crowd roars in approval. Overhand right from Ware connects with the back of Murphy’s head. Now Murphy lands a straight right that scores on the chin. One minute left -- body kick from Ware lands. Now Ware is the one circling the outskirts of the cage. Superman punch from Murphy, Ware just trying to hold on now, Ware shoots for the takedown and is sprawled. 10-9 Murphy (29-28 Murphy).
