Report: Demetrious Johnson-T.J. Dillashaw Superfight Shelved for Now

It seems fans will have to wait for the superfight between arguably the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world and current Ultimate Fighting Championship flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson and the two-time UFC bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw.

According to UFC President Dana White, the fight is not happening after recent comments to the Los Angeles Times.

“It was never made. Plus, D.J. is hurt and out for a while,” White said.

Johnson broke the UFC record for most championship defenses (11) this past October with a fifth-round submission win over Ray Borg and is currently on a 14-fight winning streak. His last loss was back in 2011 to Dominic Cruz in the heavier bantamweight division.

Dillashaw regained the bantamweight title after beating former teammate Cody Garbrandt with a second-round TKO at UFC 217 last November.

Both fighters have been vocal about wanting the fight each other. Dillashaw doesn’t buy into the hype that “Mighty Mouse” is the best fighter and believes he has the tools to beat him and take the title. Whereas Johnson is looking to branch out and challenge himself after criticism he’s received that the flyweight division doesn’t have the same calibre of fighters as heavier weight classes and therefore doesn’t get the recognition he feels is deserved.

Johnson is still recovering from his shoulder surgery and is looking to be back in time for International Fight Week in July.

Dillashaw’s next opponent has not been named, although White did mention in the report that the UFC is working on his next opponent to challenge for the 135-pound title.
