A title fight between lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard is being put together for UFC 125 on Jan.1 at the MGM Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

The fight -- a rematch of the 2008 scrap won by Maynard via unanimous decision -- has not been officially announced by the UFC. MMAFighting.com on Wednesday reported that the two fighters had verbally agreed to square off. Sherdog.com could not independently confirm the report.

Edgar is coming off his first title defense, outfoxing B.J. Penn en route to a second straight victory against “The Prodigy” at UFC 118 in August. The two lightweights first met at UFC 112 in April, when Edgar lifted Penn’s title via a contentious unanimous decision.

A former wrestler at Clarion University of Pennsylvania, Edgar made his UFC debut in 2007 and is 8-1 in the promotion to date. His lone loss came at the hands of Maynard at UFC Fight Night 13 in 2008. Since his loss to “The Bully,” Edgar has run off wins against Matt Veach, Hermes Franca and former UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk en route to winning the title from Penn this year.

Maynard became the number one contender for Edgar’s title when he dominated Kenny Florian on the same night that Edgar retained his belt against Penn at UFC 118. An Xtreme Couture product, Maynard is undefeated in 10 fights. The only non-win on the potent wrestler’s record is a no-contest from his first fight in the UFC at the “The Ultimate Fighter” Season finale. After hoisting Rob Emerson with a double-leg, Maynard slammed him to the ground, knocking out not only Emerson but himself in the process.

Since that odd debut in the promotion, Maynard has taken down the likes of German striker Dennis Siver, submission specialist Rich Clementi and former UFC sparkplug Roger Huerta -- not to mention his decision win over Edgar. Though he did not win the competition on Season 5 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” he avenged his unofficial loss to housemate Nate Diaz with a split decision victory at UFC Fight Night 20 in January.
