Andre “Chatuba” Santos, a teammate of the Jungle Fight veteran, was quoted by multiple outlets (Yahoo, Fox Sports) to have stated that Souza had been cutting weight and fell ill while in a sauna. He was taken to a hospital in the Botafogo district of Rio de Janeiro, where he was later pronounced dead.

Nova Uniao co-founder and President of Shooto Brazil Andre Pederneiras immediately cancelled the event and issued an official note about the fighter’s passing on Facebook. Pederneiras, who trains UFC champions Jose Aldo and Renan Barao, offered support for the athlete’s family and stated that a cause of death has yet to be confirmed.

“It is with great regret that we hereby report the death of Leandro Caetano de Souza. The athlete died in UPA of Botafogo. The reasons are not yet of our knowledge. We would like to express condolences to all friends and family,” stated the release.

“I hereby register the cancellation of the event would happen tomorrow [Friday, Sept. 27] in the Hebrew Club, as a sign of mourning.”

Souza was 28 years old.
