Report: Lightweights Jacob Volkmann, Paul Sass to Collide at UFC 146 in Las Vegas

Another piece of the puzzle has reportedly fallen into place for the UFC’s Memorial Day weekend card.

ESPN.co.uk reported Tuesday morning that verbal agreements are in place for a lightweight confrontation pitting English submission specialist Paul Sass against American wrestler Jacob Volkmann (Pictured) at UFC 146.

Taking place May 26 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, the event is expected to be headlined by a heavyweight title tilt pitting reigning champion Junior dos Santos against former Strikeforce king Alistair Overeem. The main draw will air live on pay-per-view, and the preliminary proceedings will likely be broadcast on FX.

Sass, 23, is undefeated as a professional. The Brit racked up 10 straight wins on his home soil before making his UFC debut in 2010, submitting Mark Holst with his trademark triangle choke at UFC 120. The Team Kaobon representative also found success in his sophomore Octagon effort, dispatching “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 12 finalist Michael Johnson with a first-round heel hook last year at UFC Live 6.

Eight years the elder of his opponent, Volkmann has been perfect since cutting to lightweight, posting five consecutive Octagon victories over the last two years. The Minnesotan earned three of those victories in 2011, outpointing former MFC champion Antonio McKee, WEC veteran Danny Castillo and “TUF 8” winner Efrain Escudero. Known for his excellent wrestling base, Volkmann has never finished a fight in the UFC.
