Report: Nelson-Mir Targeted for UFC 130

Frank Mir | Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com

A heavyweight tilt featuring Frank Mir and Roy Nelson is reportedly being put together for UFC 130.

News of the matchup was first reported by BetUs.com on Friday afternoon. UFC 130 is slated to go down May 28 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Neither the bout nor the event has been officially announced by the promotion.

Nelson comes off a loss to No. 1 contender Junior dos Santos at UFC 117 in August. The rotund Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt was supposed to face former title challenger Shane Carwin at UFC 125, but Carwin was forced to withdraw in order to undergo back surgery. Left without an opponent, Nelson was wiped from the marquee by the promotion. It then came to light that Nelson was reportedly still under contract with Roy Jones Jr.'s Square Ring Productions. Apparently the contract issues have been resolved, and “Big Country” will compete in 2011.

Prior to his loss to dos Santos, Nelson ran through Stefan Struve at UFC Fight Night in March, knocking the Dutchman out just 39 seconds into the first round. A former International Fight League heavyweight champion, Nelson won “The Ultimate Fighter 10” by knocking out up-and-comer Brendan Schaub in the season finale.

A two-time UFC heavyweight champion, Mir has been a staple of the promotion's heaviest division since his debut at UFC 34 in 2001. The 31-year-old won seven of his first eight contests inside the Octagon before capturing the heavyweight title for the first time by snapping Tim Sylvia's arm at UFC 48 in 2004.

After a motorcycle accident jeopardized his career following Mir's victory over “The Maine-iac,” the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt made his comeback nearly two years later. Recently, Mir has gone 2-2 in his last four fights, most recently defeating Mirko Filipovic in a lackluster UFC 119 main event in September. Mir holds notable victories over Cheick Kongo, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Brock Lesnar.
