World Extreme Cagefighting will host its first event on Canadian
soil on June 20 at Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta, according to
The Canadian Press.
The UFC’s sister promotion also considered Calgary for the event’s destination, but opted for Edmonton due to date and venue availability, WEC Vice-President Peter Dropkick told The Canadian Press.
"We've had good feedback from that market. Good ratings, good TV ratings and good pay-per-view buys from the UFC standpoint,” Dropkick told The Canadian Press. “… It's one of the hotter markets."
Dropkick said three to four Canadian fighters would likely compete on the card. Rexall Place holds 8,000 to 9,000 spectators in its lower bowl, while the rest of the arena will be partitioned, said the report.
WEC 49 will follow UFC 115, scheduled for the GM Place in Vancouver, British Columbia, by one week. WEC 48 takes place on April 24 at the Arco Arena in Sacramento, Calif., and will be available on pay-per-view for the first time.
