Cerrone and Lawler were initially expected to lock horns at UFC 205 this past November, but Lawler withdrew from the contest after determining he wasn’t ready to return following a knockout loss to Tyron Woodley at UFC 201.
Cerrone moved from lightweight to 170 pounds in 2016 and posted four consecutive victories over Alex Oliveira, Patrick Cote, Rick Story and Matt Brown. “Cowboy” came up short in his most recent welterweight outing, falling to Jorge Masvidal via second-round TKO at UFC on Fox 23 on Jan. 28.
Lawler, meanwhile, hasn’t competed since losing the welterweight belt to Woodley last July. Prior to that, “Ruthless” had won five straight bouts in the Octagon and eight of his last nine overall.
