Last week, former Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight champion Michael Bisping announced that he was retiring from the sport of mixed martial arts on his “Believe You Me” podcast.

Since the 39-year-old announced his official retirement, he’s been inundated by fighters and fans congratulating him on his decorated career. A number of British fighters have credited him for the inspiration he provided them getting into mixed martial arts as the sole British winner of a UFC belt.

During the recent UFC 225 media call, current middleweight champion Robert Whittaker weighed in on Bisping’s career achievements. Whittaker never got the chance to share the Octagon with Bisping, but spoke highly about the respect he has for the Brit and what he’s achieved throughout his career (via MMAFighting.com):

“I think he’s a true warrior. I really do. He’s done it all. He’s lost, he’s won, and he’s become champion. He’s a true test of endurance and determination. I really do, I think a lot of people can learn a thing or two watching his career. In terms of fighting him, from one fighter to another, there’s a lot of respect in terms of wanting to fight each other. There would’ve been a lot of respect there and a lot of honor earned, but I’m happy not to have fought him, just due to the fact that I’ve always watched him and, if I’m going to be honest with myself, I’m a bit of a fan of his, to be honest.”

Whittaker is back in action on Saturday where he will be defending the middleweight belt against Yoel Romero in a rematch inside the United Center in Chicago on June 9. The stacked UFC 225 card also features an interim UFC welterweight title bout between Rafael dos Anjos and Colby Covington and a women’s featherweight bout between Holly Holm and Megan Anderson. The main card kicks off with the return of Phil Brooks, better known as “CM Punk,” who takes on Mike Jackson.
