Sean O’Connell said he was going to call it a career following the Professional Fighters League championship on New Year’s Eve, and it looks like he’s going to follow through with those plans.

“The Real OC” recently released a statement confirming his retirement on Twitter. O’Connell previously revealed his intentions in the cage following his third-round technical knockout win over Vinny Magalhaes in the PFL final on Monday to claim the promotion’s light heavyweight championship and $1 million payout.

“I am home again in Salt Lake City and feeling happy and grateful,” O’Connell wrote. “I feel blessed to have enjoyed a fulfilling career as a pro fighter. Thank you to EVERYONE who has EVER been part of this with me. Friends, Family, coaches, training partners, promoters, opponents, fans, sponsors, and anybody else who gave even a tiny bit of themselves to my years of pretending I belong as a pro athlete. I cannot thank you all properly. I wish I could.

“I hope to stay in the MMA world as a broadcaster, but my fighting days are done. Walking away on a high note is bittersweet. But I need to preserve what is left of my brain for my loved ones. God is great, the future is bright, and I am so grateful. Happy New Year everyone! Love you all.”

O’Connell, 35, signed with the UFC in 2014 and posted a 2-5 record within the Las Vegas-based promotion. His tenure in the Octagon included TKO victories against Anthony Perosh and Matt Van Buren. After a brief hiatus, he joined the PFL in 2018, winning four of his five appearances, a stint that was capped off by his triumph over Magalhaes.

The Salt Lake City native finishes a professional career that began in 2007 with a 21-10 record. He earned 12 of his wins by KO/TKO and three by submission.
