Shamrock-Cung Le Set for March
Frank Shamrock
(Pictures) will face Cung Le (Pictures) at a March 29 EliteXC-Strikeforce
co-promoted event at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., the
promotions announced Tuesday.
"This is a fight that has been building for years," said the 35-year-old Shamrock, who choked out Phil Baroni (Pictures) last June. "This is where we both grew up, where we both found our paths in life as martial artists and champions of combat. It was inevitable that we would one day face each other here. I'm excited it's finally happening."
Cung Le (Pictures), also 35, is 5-0 in mixed martial arts after transitioning to the sport in 2006 following an undefeated career in san shou.
"People have been wondering when I'd take the next step in the cage and fight an established superstar and world champion," said Le, whose most recent win was a stoppage of Sam Morgan (Pictures) in November. "Well, here it is. The fans are in for a great fight."
The five-round contest will headline a Showtime telecast that begins live at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Preliminary bouts begin at 5 p.m. PT.
