Shields-Ellenberger Cemented as UFC Fight Night 25 Headliner

A welterweight clash between Jake Shields and Jake Ellenberger will headline UFC Fight Night 25, the promotion announced on Friday.

Subtitled “Battle on the Bayou,” the event goes down Sept. 17 from the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans. The show will air live on Spike TV. It is expected to feature a middleweight scrap between Alan Belcher and Jason MacDonald, as well as a featherweight contest pitting Erik Koch against Jonathan Brookins.

Shields (Pictured; file photo) recently had a 15-fight winning streak snapped when he was outpointed by Georges St. Pierre at UFC 129 in April. A former two-division world champion, Shields went undefeated through seven bouts in EliteXC and Strikeforce, respectively. The Cesar Gracie product made his long-anticipated UFC debut in October, grinding out a razor-thin split decision victory over Martin Kampmann at UFC 121.

Ellenberger has won eight of his last nine, his lone loss in that span coming to former WEC champion Carlos Condit in 2009. Since that defeat, “The Juggernaut” has won four straight, finishing Mike Pyle and John Howard before kicking off 2011 with a split decision win over Carlos Eduardo Rocha in February. Like Shields, Ellenberger most recently competed at UFC 129, knocking out hometown favorite Sean Pierson in the first round.
