Shields-Ellenberger Clash Headlines UFC's Bayou Return

A rumored welterweight scrap pitting Jake Shields (pictured) against Jake Ellenberger was Tuesday announced as the headlining attraction for the UFC's “Battle on the Bayou.”

Emanating from the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans on Sept. 17, “Battle on the Bayou” marks the UFC's first trip to Louisiana since UFC 37 in 2002. Verbal agreements are now in place for the Shields-Ellenberger headliner.

Also slated for the event is a pair of middleweight bouts featuring Jason MacDonald taking on the returning Alan Belcher while Dongi Yang meets Court McGee. Rounding out the announced bouts is a featherweight confrontation between Erik Koch and Jonathan Brookins.

Shields recently had a 15-fight win streak snapped when he challenged Georges St. Pierre for the UFC welterweight title in April. After winning the EliteXC welterweight title and the Strikeforce middleweight championship, Shields made a successful but controversial UFC debut this past October, edging out Danish striker Martin Kampmann by split decision to earn his shot at St. Pierre.

Ellenberger has won his last four bouts. The 26-year-old has not lost since 2009, besting Mike Pyle and John Howard in 2010 before defeating Carlos Eduardo Rocha to kick off this year. Most recently, “The Juggernaut” knocked out Sean Pierson in the first round of their UFC 129 clash on April 30.
