‘Shogun’ Rua, Chael Sonnen Official for UFC Fight Night 26 Main Event in Boston

The paths of two tried-and-true Ultimate Fighting Championship competitors will cross in Beantown, where legendary figures like Bill Russell, Ted Williams and Bobby Orr still cast larger-than-life shadows.

Former light heavyweight champion Mauricio Rua checked in at 205 pounds for his showdown with with three-time title challenger Chael Sonnen (205) in the UFC Fight Night 26 main event on Saturday at the TD Garden in Boston. Heavyweight co-headliners Alistair Overeem (255.5) and Travis Browne (236) also met their contracted weight requirements without issue at Friday’s official weigh-in.

Rua last appeared at UFC on Fox 5 in December, when he lost a unanimous decision to surging Swede Alexander Gustafsson at KeyArena in Seattle. The 31-year-old Brazilian has secured 18 of his 21 career victories by knockout or technical knockout and owns wins over six former UFC champions: Quinton Jackson, Kevin Randleman, Mark Coleman, Chuck Liddell, Lyoto Machida and Forrest Griffin. Rua has compiled a 5-5 record since arriving in the UFC back in 2007.

Sonnen will enter the cage on a two-fight losing streak. The 36-year-old Milwaukie, Ore., native last fought at UFC 159 in April, when he failed in his bid to unseat current 205-pound champion Jon Jones and succumbed to first-round blows at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Sonnen was an NCAA All-American wrestler at the University of Oregon, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology. He holds a 6-6 mark in the UFC.

The UFC Fight Night 26 main card -- which airs on Fox Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT -- will also feature a bantamweight scrap pairing Team Alpha Male’s Urijah Faber (135.5) with Iuri Alcantara (136), a welterweight tilt matching Matt Brown (171) with Syndicate MMA’s Mike Pyle (170), a middleweight clash pitting onetime Ring of Combat champion Uriah Hall (184) against John Howard (185) and a lightweight duel pairing Joe Lauzon (156) with “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 12 finalist Michael Johnson (156).

Two hours prior, Fox Sports 1 will also carry four preliminary bouts: Brad Pickett (135.5) vs. Michael McDonald (135.5), Conor McGregor (146) vs. Max Holloway (145), Mike Thomas Brown (145.5) vs. Steven Siler (145.5) and Diego Brandao (146) vs. Daniel Pineda (144.5). The three remaining undercard fights will stream to the UFC’s Facebook page at 4:30 p.m. ET/1:30 p.m. PT, as Manny Gamburyan (145.5) locks horns with American Top Team’s Cole Miller (146), Grudge Training Center export Cody Donovan (204) meets Ovince St. Preux (205.5) and “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 13 finalist Ramsey Nijem (156) faces James Vick (155).
