The highly-anticipated but delayed mega fight between WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman and former world champ Shawn Porter officially has a home: The Barclays center in Brooklyn, Sherdog.com learned from an industry insider Friday afternoon. Managing Editor Mike Fridley was the first to report the news on Twitter.
The two were supposed to clash on March 12 in the Mohegan Sun Resort Casino in Connecticut, but when “One Time” was injured in a motor vehicle accident, the bout was postponed. June 25 has been the target date for several weeks, but until today there hasn’t been an official home. CBS will televise the championship clash live.
Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs) is one of boxing’s brightest young stars. A bout against Porter is expected to be his toughest test to date and the boxing world was torn as to whom it felt was going to be victorious. Thurman already holds wins over Jesus Soto Karass, Julio Diaz and Robert Guerrero and the Floridian is poised to take that next step toward stardom.
Porter (26-1-1, 16 KOs), meanwhile, has been hell-bent on getting back to where he was before he lost a decision to Kell Brook two years ago. He has since rebounded with a thrilling win over Adrien Broner, but “Showtime” also holds wins over Paulie Malignaggi, Diaz and Devon Alexander, all former world champions.
A full undercard will be announced in the coming weeks.
