Source: Palhares-Ferreira Targeted for UFC ‘Rio’

A battle of submission specialists is in the works for August, as middleweights Rousimar Palhares and Alexandre Ferreira will likely square off at UFC 134 “Rio.”

Sherdog.com confirmed the news with a source close to the matchup on Thursday following an initial report from Brazilian outlet Portal do Vale Tudo. Palhares (Pictured; file photo) and Ferreira were originally supposed to meet at UFC Live 3 in March, but Ferreira was forced to withdraw from the bout two months prior in light of the massive floods that affected Brazil.

UFC 134 goes down Aug. 27 from the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The event will likely be headlined by a middleweight title rematch, as Anderson Silva takes on No. 1 contender Yushin Okami. The card is also scheduled to feature a light heavyweight rematch between former champions Mauricio Rua and Forrest Griffin.

Palhares, 31, has won four of his last five bouts inside the Octagon. His lone loss in the last two years came to Nate Marquardt at UFC Fight Night 22 in September. After diving for one of his trademark leg locks early in the first frame, “Toquinho” complained to the referee after Marquardt squirmed out of the hold. The Grudge Training Center fighter capitalized on Palhares’ divided attention and dropped a brutal right hand that led to the fight’s finish. Most recently, Palhares submitted Dave Branch with a kneebar in March.

“Cacareco” recently had a seven-fight winning streak spoiled in his UFC debut, when the Brazilian was blitzed by former International Fight League champion Vladimir Matyushenko at UFC 122 in November. A 12-year veteran of the sport, Ferreira will make the drop from light heavyweight for his bout against Palhares in Rio de Janeiro. The Brazilian is a veteran of IFL, Jungle Fight and WVC competition, and he owns 17 of his 18 career wins by submission.
