St. Pierre, Koscheck Official for UFC 124
Brian Knapp Dec 10, 2010
Months of propaganda and rhetoric will cede to good old-fashioned
reality when UFC welterweight champion Georges
St. Pierre locks horns with Josh
Koscheck for a second time inside the Octagon. On Friday, “The
Ultimate Fighter” Season 12 coaches got their last bit of pre-fight
business out of the way.
St. Pierre tipped the scales at 170 pounds for his UFC 124 main event with Koscheck (169) on Saturday at the Bell Centre in Montreal. The eight other men booked for main card duty -- co-headliners Stefan Struve (253) and Sean McCorkle (264) included -- also met their mandated weight requirements without incident at Friday’s official weigh-in.
St. Pierre will carry a seven-fight winning streak into his latest
title defense. The 29-year-old last appeared at UFC 111 in March,
when he defeated Dan Hardy by
unanimous decision at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Based
out of the Jackson’s Mixed Martial Arts-affiliated Tristar Gym, St.
Pierre holds black belts in three different disciplines --
Kyokushin karate, Gaidojitsu and Brazilian jiu-jitsu -- and has
secured more than half (13) of his 20 career victories by knockout,
technical knockout or submission. His list of victims includes a
who’s who of welterweights, from hall of famer Matt Hughes
(twice) and B.J. Penn
(twice) to American Top Team’s Thiago
Alves, the American Kickboxing Academy’s Jon Fitch and
former International Fight League champion Jay
Hieron.
Anchored at the American Kickboxing Academy, Koscheck has rattled off three consecutive victories since his stunning loss to Paulo Thiago at UFC 95. The 33-year-old Waynesburg, Pa., native has not competed since he cruised to a unanimous decision over the world-ranked Paul Daley at UFC 113 in May. One of MMA’s most accomplished amateur wrestlers, Koscheck was a four-time collegiate All-American at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, where he won a national championship in 2001. Victories over “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 1 winner Diego Sanchez, former Icon Sport champion Frank Trigg, the resurgent Chris Lytle and Anthony Johnson anchor his resume.
UFC 124 -- which also features a lightweight duel pairing AMA Fight Club standout Jim Miller (155) with the unbeaten Charles Oliveira (153.5), a welterweight tilt pitting Alves (171) against John Howard (171) and a matchup between former “The Ultimate Fighter” winners Joe Stevenson (155.5) and Mac Danzig (156) -- will air live on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.
