Leading Shooto promoter Sustain has added five bouts to its Nov. 8 BACK TO OUR ROOTS 06 supercard at Yoyogi National Stadium Second Gymnasium in Tokyo.
In the highest profile addition, Shooto world 123-pound champion "BJ"
Shinichi Kojima (Pictures) will jump up to Shooto's 132-pound division to take on 18-year-old Brazilian prodigy
Eduardo Dantas.
Kojima, who is coming off a victory over
Yasuhiro Akagi (Pictures) in July, has said he hoped to one day hold both Shooto's 123-pound and 132-pound world titles. This bout will be his first at 132 pounds in Shooto, although in his only competition outside of Japan, he bested American
Chris MacGrath (Pictures) at a 130-pound catch-weight.
The young Nova Uniao product Dantas was disqualified in his most recent bout, after soccer kicking an all-but-defeated
Aritano Barbosa in September. Nonetheless, the
Andre Pederneiras pupil has already recorded two wins under Shooto sanctioning, knocking off
William Parrudinho and
Fabio Oliveira earlier this year.
Also added to the card, female superstar
Megumi Fujii (Pictures) will take on streaking
Kyoko Takabayashi (Pictures) in a sterling 115-pound competition.
Viewed by many as the top female fighter in the world, Fujii submitted fellow female stalwart
Lisa Ward (Pictures) at BodogFIGHT's Vancouver taping in August. Meanwhile Takabayashi has enjoyed one of the best years of any female fighter, going 3-0 in her 2007 campaign, including Shooto wins over previously undefeated Yuuko and a blowout of ironwoman
Masako Yoshida (Pictures).
Noted muay Thai wildman Rambaa "M-16" Somdet will step up in weight to challenge fast-rising 123-pounder
Masaaki Sugawara (Pictures). After more than four years of MMA inactivity, Somdet returned to MMA earlier this year and dominated
Takehiro Harusaki (Pictures) in an anticipated 115-pound clash.
However, the lanky Sugawara has looked sensational in his last two Shooto bouts, emerging victorious over
Yuki Shoujou (Pictures) in a wild slugfest last November, before punching out
Toshimichi Akagi (Pictures) in the first round in June.
Also added to the lineup for Nov. 8 are a 183-pound tussle between former Shooto rookie champion
Masashi Yozen (Pictures) and Brazilian import Leandro "Batata" Silva and a 143-pound affair between
Hayate Usui (Pictures) and
Shintaro Ishiwatari (Pictures), two fighters inching toward Class A Shooto promotions.
