Sylvia, Alexander Headline Adrenaline 4

Former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia will return to competitive duty when he meets Jason Riley in the Adrenaline MMA 4 main event on Sept. 18 at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

The 33-year-old Sylvia has fallen on hard times. Once regarded as one of the world’s top 10 heavyweights, he has lost three consecutive fights and four of his last five. He last appeared at Adrenaline MMA 3 in June, when he suffered an embarrassing eight-second knockout loss to 48-year-old boxer Ray Mercer. A product of the Miletich Fighting Systems camp, the 6-foot-8 Sylvia holds victories against former UFC champions Andrei Arlovski and Ricco Rodriguez, one-time World Extreme Cagefighting titleholder Jason Lambert and former International Fight League stalwart Ben Rothwell. Sixteen of his 24 career wins have come by knockout or technical knockout.

The reigning North American Allied Fight Series heavyweight champion, Riley (6-1) has gone the distance only once in seven professional bouts. He has not fought since he knocked out Justin Black in 1:45 at NAAFS “Caged Vengeance 4” four months ago. Riley’s last four fights have ended inside one round, three of them with his hand raised.

In the Adrenaline MMA 4 co-main event, one-time UFC juggernaut Houston Alexander will lock horns with journeyman Sherman Pendergarst.

Alexander has not survived the first round in any of his past three fights, including an eight-second knockout loss to James Irvin. The 37-year-old Nebraskan last competed at UFC Fight Night 15 in September, when he submitted to an arm-triangle choke from Eric Schafer. Alexander burst on the scene in 2007 after he smashed through Keith Jardine and Alessio Sakara in less than two minutes combined.

A UFC, Ring of Fire and Bellator Fighting Championships veteran, the well-traveled Pendergarst finds himself in desperate need of a victory. He has lost 11 of his last 14 fights, including five in a row. Pendergarst succumbed to first-round strikes against Joey Beltran in May and has not appeared since.
