On a night with a few worthy candidates, it was Jared Cannonier and Ion Cutelaba who walked away with “Fight of the Night” honors at "The Ultimate Fighter 24” finale.
Cannonier and Cutelaba received $50,000 apiece for a light heavyweight slugfest that saw both men have their moments at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. While Cutelaba worked the body and head effectively and landed a pair of takedowns in round one, he couldn’t maintain his pace throughout. Instead, it was Cannonier who turned it on over the final 10 minutes, landing powerful punching combinations to win a unanimous decision.
Meanwhile, Sara McMann earned a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” check by becoming the first person to submit Alexis Davis. The 2004 Olympic silver medalist landed a hip toss early in the second round and passed to half guard. From there, McMann framed an arm-triangle choke and forced the tapout 2:52 into the second stanza.
Finally, Anthony Smith garnered the evening’s other $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus for his finish of Elvis Mutapcic in a preliminary middleweight scrap. “Lionheart” floored his opponent with an elbow, and then polished off the victory with follow-up hammerfists at the 3:27 mark of round two.
