Tavares-Stout, Barboza-Etim Targeted for UFC 142 in Brazil
Two lightweight contests have been added to the UFC’s next trip to
Brazil, as promotion officials Tuesday announced that Thiago
Tavares will face Sam Stout and
Edson
Barboza will meet Terry Etim at
UFC
142.
Featuring a featherweight title clash between Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes, as well as a middleweight bout between Vitor Belfort and Anthony Johnson, UFC 142 is expected to go down Jan. 14 at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro.
An 11-time UFC veteran, Tavares (Pictured) has been inconsistent as
a member of the UFC roster, compiling a promotional record of
6-4-1. The Brazilian split bouts in 2011, falling by knockout to
Shane
Roller before finishing Spencer
Fisher in front of a partisan crowd at UFC 134 this August.
Like his foe, Stout has also fought 11 times for the UFC, going 6-5 in the promotion since his 2006 debut. The Canadian has found success of late, winning four of his last five and putting forth a potential “Knockout of the Year” nominee against Yves Edwards at UFC 131.
Barboza, 25, has yet to taste defeat as a professional. After debuting impressively in the UFC by chopping down Mike Lullo, the Brazilian posted two hard-fought decision wins in 2011, edging out Anthony Njokuani and Ross Pearson in March and August, respectively.
Etim recently returned to the UFC following an extended injury layoff to submit Edward Faaloloto in just 17 seconds at UFC 138. Prior to that Nov. 5 win, the Brit had won four of his last five before succumbing to a reoccurring rib injury that sidelined him for 19 months.
