Glover Teixeira will not have a new opponent at UFC on Fox 20.
The Las Vegas-based promotion announced on Friday that Teixeira’s initially scheduled co-headlining bout for the July 23 event against Anthony Johnson has been postponed. According to a release, Johnson, whose exit was initially reported last week, was forced to withdraw from the contest “to tend to a serious family matter.” The UFC plans to rebook Johnson-Teixiera in the “near future.”
As a result, a lightweight clash between Gilbert Melendez and Edson Barboza has been elevated to the co-main event. UFC on Fox 20 takes place at the United Center in Chicago and is headlined by a bantamweight clash between Holly Holm and Valentina Shevchenko. The evening’s main card will air on the Fox Network.
Melendez has lost two straight in the Octagon and recently completed a year-long suspension for failing a post-fight drug test following a defeat to Eddie Alvarez at UFC 188. Barboza has won two of his last three fights, including a unanimous verdict over Anthony Pettis in his most recent outing at UFC 197 on April 23.
