The Ultimate Fighter: U.K. vs. Australia?

UFC executive Marshall Zelaznik (file photo) discussed "The Ultimate Fighter." | Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com

Last week, during a media conference call, UFC President Dana White remarked that his promotion had plans to launch international editions of its popular reality show, “The Ultimate Fighter,” possibly even by the end of 2011.

White mentioned the Philippines, Canada and the U.K. as likely locales for the new iterations. However, during Wednesday’s UFC 127 prefight news conference in Sydney, Australia, UFC Managing Director of International Relations Marshall Zelaznik discussed another potential global twist for an upcoming season.

“We’re getting pretty far along. We’re not in the position to announce anything,” Zelaznik said when questioned on the progress of a “U.K. vs. Australia” season of “TUF.”

“There’s a lot of interest in the U.K. for it and a lot of interest for it here in Australia. We think it would be a massive, massive hit and could take us to the next level here.”

According to Zelaznik, the concept already has a catchy title attached. In a play on the century-long England-Australia cricket rivalry known as “The Ashes,” the MMA version is being referred to as “The Smashes.”
