Resurrection Fighting Alliance on Tuesday announced that Thiago Moises will stand opposite E.J. Chavez in the lightweight title main event of RFA 38. The battle will go down on June 3 at The Hangar at the OC Fair and Event Center in Costa Mesa, Calif.
Brazil’s Moises will look to defend his title for the first time since submitting David Castillo with a spectacular second-round helicopter armbar in February at RFA 35. The rising titlist has lost just once thus far as a pro and he expects to continue his ascent through the world rankings against Chavez, a UFC veteran.
“I am motivated and working hard,” stated Moises. “E.J. Chavez is a tough UFC vet, but I am the champion. I am going to dominate him and let everybody know I am the best in this division.”
Chavez, who went 1-2 in his brief stint inside the Octagon, has won two in a row on the smaller circuit including a first-round knockout of Justin Buchholz. His previous outing was in December at RFA 33 where he edged Adam Townsend via split decision, which was the promotion’s 2015 fight of the year. For him, a win over Moises is mandatory.
“To fight for the RFA title in my backyard is huge,” Chavez exclaimed. “It’s a great promotion. They springboard all of their champions to the UFC, which is where I’m trying to get back to. I have a good track record in Orange County. I’ve never lost a fight here. Thiago will be looking for the submission and I will be looking for the KO. There is no way this fight goes the distance. It will be a great fight for the fans.”
The full card for RFA 38: Moises vs. Chavez will be announced soon. The entire main card will be televised live on AXS TV at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.
