A lightweight clash between Josh Thomson and Gilbert Burns and a welterweight scrap pitting Erick Silva against Ben Saunders have been added to the UFC Fight Night bill slated for March 21.
UFC Fight Night "Faber vs. Assuncao" takes place at the Maracanazinho Gymnasium in Rio de Janeiro and will also include a trio of lightweight matchups: Matt Wiman vs. Leonardo Santos, Cain Carrizosa vs. Leonardo Mafra Texeira and Drew Dober vs. Leandro Silva. Promotion officials announced the bouts on Thursday.
The card is headlined by a bantamweight showdown between Urijah Faber and Raphael Assuncao and airs on Fox Sports 1.
Thomson has lost two of three since coming to the UFC from Strikeforce. After knocking out Nate Diaz in his promotional debut, “The Punk” has dropped back-to-back split decisions to Benson Henderson and Bobby Green in his last two outings.
A member of the Blackzilians camp, Burns is 9-0 as a professional, including triumphs over Andreas Stahl and Christos Giagos in the Octagon. “Durinho” has finished all but one of his opponents inside the distance.
Silva went 2-1 in 2014, with first-round finishes of Takenori Sato and Mike Rhodes. His most memorable clash, however, came in defeat against Matt Brown on May 10, a high-octane affair that ended with Brown stopping the Brazilian 2:11 into the third frame.
After a four-year hiatus, Saunders returned to the Octagon in style on Aug. 23, scoring the first omoplata finish in promotion history against Chris Heatherly at UFC Fight Night “Henderson vs. dos Anjos.” In his most recent bout, “Killa B” earned a first-round TKO victory over Joe Riggs at UFC on Fox 13 when his opponent suffered a neck injury 57 seconds into the initial stanza.
