Tony Ferguson will have the chance to avenge the lone loss of his Octagon tenure when he meets Michael Johnson at UFC 197 on March 5.
Promotion officials announced the lightweight contest on Thursday. UFC 197 takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and is headlined by a 155-pound championship clash between Rafael dos Anjos and Conor McGregor. In the co-main event, Holly Holm will defend the bantamweight belt against Miesha Tate.
Ferguson has established himself as one of the promotion’s top lightweight contenders since losing a unanimous decision to Johnson at UFC on Fox 3 in May 2012. “El Cucuy” has won seven straight fights, including a second-round submission of Edson Barboza in his most recent outing at “The Ultimate Fighter 22” finale.
Johnson, meanwhile, has lost back-to-back contests, falling to Nate Diaz via unanimous decision at UFC on Fox 17 and dropping a contentious split verdict to Beneil Dariush at UFC Fight Night Nashville. Prior to that, “The Menace” had won four straight, besting Barboza, Melvin Guillard, Gleison Tibau and Joe Lauzon in succession.
