“It’s a tremendous matchup, and one that the whole world wants to see,” One Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong said in a release. “I have no doubt that these two warriors will be putting on a great show for everyone watching live in Bangkok.”
Nguyen, 28, scored a second-round knockout of Eduard Folayang at One “Legends of the World” on Nov. 10 to capture lightweight gold and become the promotion’s first ever two-division champion. The Australia-based fighter knocked out Marat Gafurov at One “Quest for Greatness” on Aug. 18 to become 145-pound king. Nguyen owns a 10-1 career mark, with all of his triumphs coming inside the distance.
Fernandes enters the matchup on a 13-fight winning streak. The 37-year-old Brazilian won the bantamweight crown in 2013 and has since made six consecutive title defenses. The Dream veteran is 21-3 as a professional, including 10 wins by knockout, technical knockout or submission.
