Tyson Fury vs. Francis Ngannou

Round 1

After an elaborate prefight musical performance from Lil’ Baby and Becky G that lasted approximately 20 minutes, the ring has risen out of the floor for Fury vs. Ngannou. In case you haven’t somehow heard, there are quite a few celebrities and combat sports luminaries in attendance. Some of the notables include Kanye West, Eminem, Cristiano Ronaldo, Vince McMahon, Conor McGregor, Manny Pacquiao, Israel Adesanya and the Undertaker, to name a few. It will be Ngannou’s first combat sports appearance of any kind since January 2022, when he defended the UFC heavyweight belt against Ciryl Gane. Fury, meanwhile, has already signed to fight Oleksandr Usyk on Dec. 23, so he’ll need to come out of this realitvely healthy — and victorious — to make that booking a reality. Interestingly enough, both Ngannou and Fury elected to use a royalty theme for their respective walkouts. The referee for this heavyweight fight will be Michael Griffin. And with nearly two hours passed since the co-main event ended, we are finally underway. Fury comes out with a big overhand right immediately. Fury jabs the body and then catches Ngannou coming in attempting to land to the body. Ngannou backs Fury into the ropes briefly. They clinch, and it takes some work for Griffin to separate them. Fury eludes a few jabs from Ngannou. Fury probes with a body jab and evades his foe’s counter offering. Ngannou jabs the body. Ngannou again goes to the body and Fury circles out. A solid right hand over the top gets through for Fury. A stiff jab from the hip connects for “The Gypsy King.”

Round 2

Ngannou walks forward early. The Englishman steps in with a jab and Ngannou moves inside and attacks the body. More jabs get through for Fury, and Ngannou catches him with a left. Ngannou fires an uppercut on the inside and might have drawn blood on his foe’s forehead. Fury switches to southpaw. Fury lands his rear left. Ngannou has also switched to southpaw stance. They nearly clash heads in close and they break away from the clinch. Fury ducks in and they clinch again. Fury with a right hand to the body in close. Fury lunges in and ties up with Ngannou again, as he’s trying to make Ngannou carry his weight. The round ends without further incident.

Round 3

Ngannou presses the action with a left jab. Fury just misses a right. Ngannou lands a left hook as he keeps the pressure on. Fury flicks out a jab and then punches his way into a clinch. Griffin breaks them up and Fury fires a jab to the body. Ngannou with a short right in close quarters. Fury forces another tie-up. Fury fires a right hand, but Ngannou drops Fury with a counter left hook. The crowd is shocked, as it’s the seventh time Fury has ever been dropped in his boxing career. Now things are interesting, and Fury ends the round circling on the outside.

Round 4

Ngannou moves forward and lands a straight right hand. He appears to be confident now. Ngannou with a straight right to the body. Fury with a left hook, but Ngannou keeps the pressure on. Fury clinches and lands a short punch in close. Fury with a left to the body and clinches again. Fury lands a couple rear left hands and evades a right from Ngannou. Ngannou tosses Fury into the corner and they clinch again. Fury lands a rigth on the ear of Ngannou. They exchange and it’s Fury with a two punch combination that lands. Fury fires off his jab. Ngannou has slowed as the round winds down. Fury whiffs on a right hand before the bell sounds.

Round 5

Ngannou comes out swinging heavy leather, drawing an audible gasp from the crowd. Ngannou is looking to land a big punch, but he might be getting impatient. Fury with a sweeping right hand into the clinch. A jab lands for Fury and Ngannou counters with a right. Fury ducks under a punch and clinches with Ngannou. An uppercut just misses for Fury, and Ngannou answers with one of his own. Fury with a nice right behind his jab. Ngannou jabs the body. Another clean jab for Fury, who looks to be finding his rhythm. Fury sticks yet another jab before the bell.

Round 6

Fury lands a jab and avoids Ngannou’s counter. Another straight shot connects for the champion. Ngannou swings and misses a right. Fury jabs and angles out. Fury just dodges a massive uppercut from Ngannou. They clinch and Ngannou pushes Fury into the ropes before they’re separated. Fury feints and then sticks another jab. Fury fires an uppercut and circles out. They clinch in the center of the ring. More jabs from Fury, as Ngannou looks for an opening. Ngannou can’t find the range on a right before the bell.

Round 7

Ngannou stalks Fury and a glancing right hand gets Fury’s attention. Ngannou tries to jab the body, then lands a left hand from his southpaw stance. Ngannou with a left to the body from range. Ngannou lands a pair of short uppercuts in the clinch. Fury steps in with a right hand. Fury presses the action and falls to his knees during a tie-up. They’re bck in the center and Fury fires off his jab. Ngannou misses a left. Ngannou comes in with another left before the bell, but it doesn’t land clean.

Round 8

Fury lands a right as Ngannou lunges forward. Fury moves forward with a right and then a clinch. Ngannou sticks a pair of left hands to the head. They clinch and separate. Fury with a couple jabs followed by an uppercut. Ngannou lands a short left and they tie up again. Fury with a short uppercut in close and they quickly clinch again. Ngannou lands a heavy two punch combination. Ngannou is swinging heavy punches. Fury answers with a right, but Ngannou is turning up the volume and outlanding Fury in the pocket. Fury forces a clinch again. Ngannou with a couple short punches in close and both men land to the body. Fury with a two punch combo and Ngannou steps to the side. They clinch once more before the end of the round. It’s a solid performance from Ngannou so far.

Round 9

Ngannou lands a hard left hand at the outset of the frame. Fury works his jab and lands a few. Fury lands a right and Ngannou attempts to counter with a big left hook, but it doesn’t quite connect. Both men look for an opening, and the action stalls for a brief period. Fury jabs the body. Another jab lands for Fury, and Ngannou walks forward. Fury lands a hook in an exchnage. They tie up for a moment and Ngannou jabs after the break. Fury jabs the body and backs away. Another jab gets through for the Englishman, and the round ends shortly thereafter.

Round 10

The scorecards could be very interesting heading into the final round. Ngannou stalks Fury and just misses a left hook. Ngannou whiffs on a right and the fighters nod at one another. Ngannou fires a right to the body as a “Francis” chant goes up in the arena. Ngannou stays busy with his jab to keep his foe on the defensive. Fury lands a jab of his own. Another jab connects for the “Gypsy King”. Ngannou moves in and they trade in close. Ngannou appears to try a superman punch before landing in a tie-up. It didn’t land clean, though. Fury drops his hands and bounces around, inviting Ngannou in. Ngannou comes forward and eats a left hook in the waning seconds. No matter how this one turns out, it’s a remarkable performance for the former UFC heavyweight champion.
