UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida earned $200,000 in his first successful title defense against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 104 last Saturday in Los Angeles, according to figures released by the California State Athletic Commission Tuesday.

Rua, who utilized a carefully crafted strategy of body kicks and aggressive clinch work, took home $155,000 in the closely contested fight that many thought went in his favor. UFC President Dana White announced shortly after that Rua will get an “immediate rematch.”

The event had 14,892 in attendance (paid and comped ticket totals were not initially reported) for a gross gate of $1,913,093.62, said the CSAC.

Meanwhile, rising heavyweight Cain Velasquez lived up to a bit of his feverish hype by pounding out a dominant second-round technical knockout against Ben Rothwell. The American Kickboxing Academy fighter banked $70,000 for the victory, while Rothwell made $50,000 in his Octagon debut.

Undercard entry Pat Barry was the night’s big winner though with an emotionally charged second-round finish against the towering Antoni Hardonk. Barry’s performance, which was the highlight of a one-hour Spike TV broadcast prior to the pay-per-view portion, earned $134,000, including a “Fight of the Night” and “Knockout” Bonus doled out by the promotion. Hardonk made $16,000.

In the night’s first bout, stringbean-built Stefan Struve got a boost with a $60,000 submission bonus, taking his winnings to $74,000 for his first-round tapout of Chase Gormley. California native Gormley earned $10,000.
